the book you are thinking of was probably "The Inner Game of Tennis" but I have found something much better now. I recommend "With Winning In Mind" it is much more clear and concise than "the inner game" which was by comparison very obtuse and obscure.

I had also spoken of Brad Gilbert's book on Tennis called "Winning Ugly" which I still recommend.

"With Winning in Mind" really has some good info in it, specifically in how to play your best under pressure. This is something that I really needed. I started seeing results in 24 hours, literally. I received the book the day before a tournament and on the next day I played great. I played very well in Vegas too. More importantly, the book has some great ideas on how to reach the next level. I took notes on myself throughout Vegas. I realized that I need to be able to return fast serves to my backhand better. I also realized that I need better drop shots and flips on my backhand side (my forehand side is fine). I have purchased a tournament table and a robot (got the paddle palace 988 one), and as soon as it arrives I'll be doing some extra drills. I'll also be working on some new backhand serves, the same ones that bothered me a lot. I'll be doing all of this systematically, as described in the book. We'll see how the results go.

I'm also getting rid of the Bryce FX and replacing it with Nittaku Hammond Pro Alpha. I picked up 1 sheet in Vegas, and have been doing some serves with it at my home and already I can tell that it has more tackiness in the topsheet, though the sponge is actually more firm. It seems promising so far. I'm looking to keep the same speed as the Bryce FX but add a bit more spin so I can control the slow loops and touch shots better. I've also grown tired of spending $90 every 2 months. At $28 a sheet I'm hoping this Hammond Pro Alpha will work out. I'll have some reviews later on.

That is sad to hear. I imagine that is why he has not posted here in a long time, he used to post here a lot. Any information on how he passed away? Any illness, he did not seem that old. You say he "ended his life". Unfortunate tragedy to his family and to all TT.

John Schneider I read on the about.com - table tennis/ping-pong forum this tragic news today.

Dear Table Tennis FriendsIt is my sad duty to inform you that our friend John Schneider has passed away. Last Sunday, Father’s Day, John ended his life.

Such a tragic loss for our American Table Tennis Community. John was known to his admirers as “the answer man” at about.com’s table tennis forum. If there was a table tennis question or statistic he could find the answer and you were sure it was right.

John was a tremendous help to me as an Olympic researcher in Athens. He provided key factoids on the players that were used daily by Don Chevier and Bill Clement. When I wasn’t sure of a stat I emailed him privately and he came back with 2-3 sources for the information being fact or fiction.

John was also an equipment tester for www.ping-pong.com/ttpioneers. He knew every pip inside and out and we loved being associated with such a knowledgable and solid player.

The last time I saw John was in Las Vegas where one of my students, Justen Yao played him in one of the rating events. The consumate sportsman, John never gave an inch and battled with all his brains and brawn.

This year table tennis has lost: Grady Gordon, Bob Viducich, and now John Schneider.

I think Schneider's passing will be a great loss to the forum as well as all the other forums in which he was a regular contributor.

John has always been the ultimate facts man and a tremendous asset and resource to all who use this forum. There was no doubting his dedication and love for the game.

I will miss him greatly.

Rest in Peace John Schneider.

John was...the very first person at the Westside club to introduce himself to me, 4 years ago. He had me pegged as "Drivepen" almost instantly... afterall, how many lefthanded, 6'3", white, penholders are there? I asked who he was, and he said "Some have called me "The answer man", and my reply was "Oh, you must be John." John always was a bit cryptic with me, that's what I'll miss the most, trying to figure out what angle he was coming from. Goodbye, John.
