he has 2 tricky serves, and he dosent even give her practise at returning them.

the gentel topspin serve that looks much like a heavy chop serve and his reverse serve are the only decent serves he did. the rest were long rubbish.

I will say tho, his topspin that looked like chop would have probally fooled me for the first few times. I was not sure at what time he contacted it...

I think he just tones it down so that she gets practice against serves from players of her own calibre. My father and my coach does it as well, still figuring out how to do that heavy backspin/topspin serve. It seems a lot of the older players have it in their arsenals.

I don't recall Ping ever using long pimples.  She has only used Short Pips and Inverted rubbers that I can remember.

I just looked at the video, frankly speaking it is not difficult to determine the type of spin of his service, but wheather we can return the ball properly is another story.

Anyone able to determine the type of spin from Ma Lin's serve ?

i agree that ma lin's serves are very well hidden - best of all penhold players hands down. his match against maze at the world championships was a serving clinic at times. this enables him to utilize his famous 3rd ball attack. for this reason, ma is one of my most admired players. his disguise of side down and side top spin is incredible.

the only person who can tell you that would be his coach(es) and, i guess, wang liqin, who apparently doesn't have a problem returning them at all...

Thats what people mean when they say that Ma Lin's worst opponents are always his teammates. When you play each other all the time the gap between the levels decrease tremendously. Add to that the fact that the fast attacking game is based around confusing your opponent until you kill the ball and Ma Lin is at a huge disadvantage every time he plays someone he trains with, especially Wang Liqin since they are technically the same level.

Does anybody know how he makes this topspin serve which looks like a chop serve ?

His motions are to quick for me to find it out.

Make a little Z motion in the vertical direction while the paddle is moving forward.  Contact the ball on the upward portion of the Z.

Perhaps a picture would help clarify what I'm trying to say.

@ Robert

Thank you.  You really helped me.

I think hitting the ball at the right time is very difficult. I am going to try this in training.

Yes, that is a fairly heavy topspin in the animation gif.

That was an excellent video!  The best serve/return video I've ever seen.  That guy is a truly great server.  The one where he quickly comes up then chops down is so smooth.  I had to really work to tell myself he was hitting it on the way up.  Yeah, it's not in english, but if you watch her returns you can tell very easilly what he was doing.  Thanks for posting that one.  That was a treat!

I only watched part of it, but it's a great video. I'm not sure who put the subtitles, and if they were joking :), but "la" means loop. At that moment he's telling her to sidestep and loop the ball. He also criticizes her for being too fast and hard sometimes.

I put the subtitles in.  I was thinking "la qiu" (la cho) meant something like "put a little pepper" on the ball or hit it a little faster.  I was only guessing though.

Thanks for the insight.
