HardSmash notes: That is a nice video to show the many different players with their own styles. The gentleman in the video, Bill, plays amazing well with a "fly swatter" grip. I think one finds it difficult, though, to master table tennis with this grip (if no backhand is used, but to swat balls in the "fly swatter" position).

:
The unique style comes from 1st learning TT where there were no clubs & age 60. One must then try to make lemonade out of lemon's. Which I attempted while traveling and playing in the Orient for 7 years & getting lessons from world champions Like Deng Yaping who also used Friendship 755 long pips & 729. The video was taken on my 1st match against a good player that was warmed up. Having played very little on the road in the last month, Phoenix was my 1st chance to play and I asked Rob to point out a Dr. Nuebauer player to learn against as I have just encountered it & did not understand it at that time, the result was predictable. However, playing him the next time when I was warmed up & attacked I won easily. And now more in practice, I played at the last Phoenix club night and played on the same King of the Hill table..... Winning in succession against Arizona's top player, Luis and three 1900+ player's. And the only losing record I have had in Arizona has been against #1 Louis........... Snapshots of selected matches do not always paint a very accurate picture. But Rob's video's are interesting and allows us to view different styles & tactics. http://forums.about.com/ab-tabletennis/messages?msg=17211.3 Bill continues: Yes, Marco, I forgot. Just as I failed to go into detail of my wins. My point was that it distorted the reality by showing someone's 1st match when the opponent has played several matches, and when it was known they had not played in awhile and were looking for someone with Dr. Nuebauer to play since they were trying to learn against this difficult rubber they had just encountered. My point, remains that it distorted the reality & was inappropriate to tape & publicize a match without a player's knowledge or permission. And to further my point, in other matches against top players that I did not mention because I felt the point was more important than the details: I also defeated Chris Castro 4-0 in our only match in Tucson. And defeated Leo Lucas 3-1 in our only match in Sun City. Also defeated Ya 3 matches to 1 and Mario 3 matches to 0. I do not claim to be better, just lucky on those occasions & probably lose all in future. The only reason I mention this is that these players are all between 1940-2100, these are all better players than Tarkousky. Which brings in to question why a visiting player, out of practice & cold, plays a bad match and it is publicized without their knowledge or permission? Arizona has very good players, they don't need this type of help. The calls I received regarding this, including Arizona's #1 ranked player all felt this was inappropriate. At 60, I look more to socializing & excercizing, I am not going to get better, only worse.....so my view of clubs tends more to how friendly & fun they are. I enjoyed all of the players & clubs in Arizona, just question videoing visitors. |

| Marco responds to Bill:
Ahhh, so finally we get to the bottom of this. You are pissed because Rob put the video up without asking you first. Well, I can't say I blame you. I think you do have the right to be asked whether or not your video can be put up. I mean, what if you were picking your nose or something like that? And I agree that it is hard to play your best as soon as you enter the club. That win against Leo is very good. He's pretty much one of the best active players we have right now. Frankly, I'm surprised you won. I wish I could have seen that match. Maybe Rob can post the video? Just kidding. Marco |

And I thought that too at first glance. But then when I saw the videos of the post-match interviews I figured Bill must have consented.

> My point, remains that it distorted the reality & was inappropriate to tape & publicize a match without a player's knowledge or permission. I put them up because I thought you'd enjoy seeing them. I think there was a mention or two on the video that you weren't warmed up. When you expressed a displeasure with the video being shown, I did offer to take it down. There is also a video of you playing Jim which you won that is posted on the same webpage. --Rob Additionally, You'll hear that I agreed to give you all the proceeds from the video when you asked for them.

>>The match between Jim and Bill was unique and I thought might benefit some people to watch the types of tactical changes they make.<< I agree. And it is true that people watching might benefit. No question about it. It would only take one guy that is off work and collecting disability to see a clip of himself jumping around at a TT club publicized for him and/or you to be in a heap of trouble. I remember seeing footage of a guy working on his roof. He was in this very situation. The footage somehow got into the insurance company's hands. :)

Sean People love when their best matches are streamed and steamed when their subpar performaces are made available to others. You are kinda in a no-win situation. I saw show as much as possible so we all can learn from good technique and poor execution. If excuses need to be made I am sure this forum will be the place to post them without much censuring! Maybe we could get Rob to video tape the USATT meetings!!! Sean P. O'Neill
